Sony KDL-V40XBR4 LCD TV: Competition for 42" Plasmas?

Reviewer: Robert Wiley

While Sony withdrew entirely from the Plasma TV market in early 2005 due to a lack of control in plasma panel production, they have had tremendous success in the flat screen LCD Television market.

The Sony KDL-V40XBR4 (read the Sony KDL-40XBR4 Review at LCD TV Buying Guide) is an impressive set in the lucrative 40-42 inch market. The LCDs score ranks with plasma TVs in many areas and received an overall test score of 91.25/100. Enhanced pixel technology allows for an increased off axis viewing angle and its measured 985:1 contrast ratio is impressive for an LCD, which normally contain mediocre black-level performance.

With a reasonable price and solid performance, will this Sony LCD TV be able to compete against Plasma's dominance in it's intended market?
