Key Features of the Panasonic TH-42PD25U/P 42" Plasma Monitor

Panasonic TH-42PD25U/P Plasma TV

The Panasonic Plasma TH-42PD25U/P features a high contrast ratio of 3000:1, making for a super bright, razor-sharp picture. With 853 x 480 native resolution, the Panasonic TH42PX25U/P is an Enhanced Definition Television (EDTV) unit, and includes an integrated ATSC/QAM tuner for receiving DTV broadcasts. The new Panasonic-pioneered CableCARD feature allows you to receive digital cable television without a bulky, separate set-top box.

Panasonic Plasma Technology

Motion-Adaptive 3D Y/C Digital Comb Filter*
Foremost among the 2003 Panasonic plasma displays' technical advancements is the motion adaptive 3-D Y/C digital comb filter. This filter simultaneously examines three successive scan lines, performing field-by-field comparisons of the television image to accurately separate the color information from black and white. The filter works to minimize both horizontally and vertically hanging dots, as well as dot crawl. Displays bright colors and action scenes with incredible clarity by minimizing the "color rainbow effect" in closely spaced patterns, compensating for the motion that occurs between fields.

Progressive Processing
Progressive Scan displays a full frame of video in 1/60th of a second by de-interlacing the incoming video signal and progressively scanning the image. With it, you generally don't see the horizontal scan lines that are often visible in ordinary television images.

EDTV (480p) Display Capability
This Plasma TV enables you to view high-definition or enhanced-definition TV programming in the 480p signal format. A DTV signal must be present in your area and the set-top box must be tuned to the proper channel. An external over-the-air antenna may be required.

Cable CARD Technology
The Cable CARD feature of the Panasonic TH-42PD25U/P lets you connect directly to your Cable CARD-compliant cable TV system without the need for the standard bulky cable box. Check with your cable provider for compatibility.

Convenience Features

Built-in NTSC Tuner and Speaker System
The Panasonic TH-42PD25U/P is the first Panasonic plasma set that requires no add-ons to enjoy NTSC or ATSC television viewing. The TH-42PD25U/P includes built-in NTSC tuners and 5 bass reflex type speakers. The fact that Panasonic was able to add a built-in tuner and speakers while retaining the unique plasma look and style is particularly noteworthy.

Dual-Tuner Picture-in-Picture with Split-Screen Display
Lets you view two programs at once by dividing the screen.

Scalable P-I-P Image Size
Lets you choose the size of the picture-in-picture window from as small as 1/16 to as large as 1/4 of the main picture.

Anti-Reflective Screen Coating

Wide Viewing Angle (160º)
This Plasma TV's cinema-like 16:9 screens boast a wide 160º viewing angle, creating a distortion-free picture that can be enjoyed by everyone in the room, regardless of their position.

Trilingual On-Screen Display
Display the on-screen menus and setting in English, Spanish or French.

V-Chip Program Lock Out Allows you to program the television to block out specific TV channels.

Built-in 16W (8W x 2) Stereo Speakers

Audio System Features

BBE® ViVA High-Definition 3D Sound
BBE High-Definition sound provides true linear phase correction and dynamic amplitude compensation, improving speech intelligibility and the dynamic range of musical passages, giving music a realistic, 'live' presence. No other audio processor brings natural clarity and crisp definition to the spoken work like BBE can. With BBE, the spoken word can be heard clearly and easily, and at lower volume levels.

BBE ViVA is a new High Definition 3D Sound technology which integrates a 3D enhancement effect with BBE High Definition Sound. BBE ViVA creates an authentic and exciting 3D sound effect from stereo speakers while preserving the clarity, definition, presence and texture for which BBE High Definition Sound is noted. An important feature of BBE ViVA is its ability to maintain proper sound stage imaging. Ordinary 3D sound effects often tear the stereo image down the middle, resulting in centrally staged audio material, such as dialogue, becoming fuzzy or even disappearing. BBE ViVA is different because it maintains crystal clarity for solo vocals and movie dialogue.

Manufactured under license from BBE Sound, Inc.

AI Picture and Sound
The Panasonic TH-42PD25U/P boasts AI (Artificial Intelligence) Picture and Sound. AI Picture continuously monitors signal conditions to maintain high contrast in the picture, and can even darken areas when necessary without affecting overall black level or brightness. AI Sound controls volume level automatically to prevent jarring variations in volume from different channels or programming.

Terminals and Connections

Enhanced "Jack Pack"
The TH-42PD25U/P features an enhanced "jack pack" including: one front and two rear A/V inputs; one front and two rear S-Video inputs; and two rear component inputs and an HDMI interface.

HDMI Input
The Panasonic TH-42PD25U/P display features HDMI input. HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) is the first industry-supported, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface. HDMI provides an interface between any audio/video source, such as a set-top box, DVD player, and A/V receiver and an audio and/or video monitor, such as a digital television (DTV). HDMI supports standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements and requirements.

Component Video Inputs - 2 Back
Provide outstanding resolution and color accuracy for video images, and can accept either progressive or interlaced signals from a variety of sources including DVD players and DTV set-top receivers/ decoders. The three-wire connection is comprised of the luminance signal (Y) and two color difference signals, R-Y (PR) and B-Y (PB).

S Video Input Jacks - 1 Front and 2 Back
Allows you to connect a DBS (digital broadcast satellite), DVD player, or other video source directly to the luminance and chrominance circuits of the TV set. By keeping color and luminance information separate, cross-color interference is virtually eliminated from the picture.

SD Memory Card Slot
The TH-42PD25U/P features an SD Memory Card slot. Images from a digital still camera or digital video camera stored on the card can be viewed on the large screen, allowing users to enjoy slide shows without needing extra connection cables or other equipment.

PC Card Slot
By putting a memory card from a digital still camera into a PC card adapter, and then placing it in the TH-42PD25U/P's PC card slot, you can view JPEG images on your TV. Compatible Memory Cards include: Standard SD Memory Card, CompactFlash, Memory Stick, MultimediaCard and Smart Media.

Panasonic 42" Review by Tom Wolfe from Hawaii
Q:  Describe the picture of the plasma TV/LCD monitor in terms of clarity, color reproduction, contrast and brightness.

A:  Clarity, color reproduction, contrast and brightness are all excellent. Out of the box, the picture settings needed very little adjustment from the factory default settings. I find the 'JUST' aspect mode on the Panasonic is great for NTSC signals with the 16:9 screen format

Q:  What are your general comments on your Plasma TVs/LCD Monitors? How do you like it?

A:  The picture quality is fantastic, as good or better than any, comparable resolution, large screen, direct view CRT or projection TV I have seen. I researched plasma monitors for about 6 mos including: reviews at the DTVCity and Plasma TV Buying Guide websites as well as live auditions at several retailers before making my selection. I had concerns about heat build-up, contrast / brightness levels and image sharpness retention in rapid action scenes, but was pleasantly surprised that none of these concerns were issues. The plasma picture on the flat screen maintains sharpness even at the periphery, resulting in a much better viewing experience.

Q:  How would you best describe the design and looks of the Plasma TV/LCD Monitor?

A:  Hi-Tech elegance! The Panasonic has a dark charcoal frame and matching stand which compliments my other components well. Inspite of the large screen size, the slim monitor design and its light weight make the unit easily incorporated into an entertainment center as well as being asthetically pleasing.

Q:  Plasma TV Inputs used? A:  1 Composite & 1 Component using RCA - BNC Cables

Q:  How long have you had the Plasma TV/LCD Monitor? A:  Less than 1 Month

Q:  What is the Plasma TV/LCD used for? A:  Home Living Room

Q:  Please explain how the Plasma TV/LCD Monitor was installed.

A:   The monitor is mounted on its stand and secured to a sliding, rotatable shelf as part of a custom designed, in-wall, entertainment center. The shelf can be slid out from the wall and the monitor rotated left or right for optimum viewing from any part of the room. When not in use the shelf can be retracted so that the monitor is flush with the wall and becomes quite unobstrusive.

Q:  Where did you purchase your Plasma TV/LCD Monitor? How was your buying experience?

A:   DTVCity. The buying experience was excellent. Prices were very competitive and sales personnel were knowledgeable and courteous. They helped me put together and complete video package to meet my needs including: monitor, stand, cables and a service contract. Although the monitor was temporarily out of stock when I placed my order, the complete shipment was made within 10 days and took only 7 days in transit to arrive safely in Hawaii. Just in time for Christmas! I was notified by e-mail at time of shipment and given a tracking number so that I was able to track the shipment in transit. I felt shipment of such an expensive, fragile item was handled very smoothly.
