HDTV Programming List of Categories
- I was considering purchasing the Panasonic 50” from DTVCity and would like to know what programming is going to be available in HDTV. Do you have any information about upcoming commitments by broadcasters?
- I have been looking into the Sony 42 XBR950, its quite pricey right now but notice its a all in one HDTV ready to go system. Is this correct and is this the best way to go.....or is it just as good of an idea to get a resonable priced Panasonic or Phillips (or) and also buy the receiver that would be needed in the future??? Thank you!!
- Anyone here of a satellite service for HDTV called VROOM? Do you have a contact number or website? Is it a good provider?
- I am considering the purchase of an HD TV or a plasma TV. The sales person I was talking to said I would have to get a cable box with an HD converter from my cable provider in order to receive HD programming. He also told me I would not need the HD converter if I purchased a plasma TV, that I would get HD programming from my current cable box. Is this true? The sales person also pointed me to a couple of plama TVs that were about the same price as the HD TVs. One was an AKAI and the other was supposedly a Samsung under a different name. The Sonys and Panasonics are still considerably more expensive than the HD TVs. What is the difference between the higher cost brand name plasma TVs and the lower cost plama TVs?
- where can i find a list of stations broadcasting in HD and at what resolution (e.g. 720p/1080i etc.). thanks!
- I see from one of your answers that HDTV programming is now coming. I heard that January 1, 2006 is the date that all broadcast companies [ABC, CBS, NBC, etc.] are required to provide the HDTV signal for ALL programming. Is that true and, if so, will the cable companies also be required to provide it with their base service? Thanks, Dick

The following are updates on upcoming 2003 and beyond HDTV commitments by broadcasters. As you already realize, we are only the messengers. But it is a frequently asked topic so we wanted to report on what we could find out.
Reported Upcoming and Current HDTV Programming
NBC - Has committed to 30% of prime time viewing in 2003 being broadcast in HDTV. Has stated that prime time shows Crossing Jordan and ER will be broadcast in HDTV along with Jay Leno.
Discovery Channel - Has also committed to prime time HDTV broadcasting.
HDNET - Mark Cuban's station continues to show 100% of its content in HDTV.
HBO - Showing 14 hours per day in HDTV.
PBS - Nature Series committed to HDTV in 2003.
CBS - 100%, 18 of 18 prime time dramas and sitcoms in HDTV in 2003. As well, the U.S. Open, NCAA football, NCAA final four, 4 post season NFL games, Master's Golf Tournament.
ABC - 2003 Monday Night Football in 720p.
ESPN - In 2003 will have special HD channel. Will show 100 events in HDTV at 720p.
These are just a few of the commitments reached thus far. We look forward to it! Bring on the HDTV!

The HDTV decoder included with the Sony XBR950 is for OTA, over-the-air, terrestrial broadcasts only (requiring a UHF/VHF antenna). It will also decode HDTV if your cable company passes the signal through unscrambled. It will not work for satellite HDTV. My personal preference is to use a separate set top decoder box. The XBR may have some features that the other monitors do not have. So you really need to decide on what you need then find a plasma that fits your needs.

It is called VOOM, www.voom.com, it is still in its infancy stages.

If you plan on getting HDTV through your cable company, you will need their box regardless of the TV you purchase. Some TVs will have an HDTV decoder built into the unit; however, those will pick up OTA signals only. Some may be able to decode the cable signal, but there are currently no standards for HD cable transmissions. I have found the cheaper plasmas to have inferior components inside that will lead to a shorter life. Some of these units will also run louder and hotter.

The website www.antennaweb.org has information specific to your area. It can provide a list of all digital stations in your area. It will not provide resolution information. ABC, ESPN, and FOX (sometimes 480p) are 720p while most other stations are 1080i.

Many people are confused over this magic deadline in the year 2006. Congress has passed a mandate to change the broadcasts from analog to digital; thereby, freeing up some of the spectrum for additional use. A digital signal does not mean it is in HDTV. Although by that time, most HDTV will be available. Feel free to read more at the following links. http://ftp.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/digitaltv.html http://www.hdtv.net/faq.htm
