- What considerations should be made when powering a plasma from a gasoline generator?
- I just bought the panasonic th42pa20 and wanted to buy a video essentials dvd to calibrate it. But there seems to be several different calibration dvds outthere. Could you recommend which calibration dvd's would be best to optimize my panasonic th42pa20. Some of the titles I've seen are: 1. "Video Essentials mastered in 4:2:2 component digital" Joe Kane production. 2."Digital Video Essentials (DVE) also by joe kane.
- I want to mount a 40-50 in plasma on a swing arm... so it can be seen from the den and living room... [pulled out from wall and turned left or right] Has anyone ever done such a installation... If so what swing arm mount did you use... and where can I get it? Thanks
- I was told by a sales person that only trained plasma fitters charging $300 could wall mount the screens. The screens are liable to crack and the warranty would be void, if attempted by the customer
- First, thanks for offering a place to find the answer to this question. Very helpful website. I am thinking of buying a plasma tv. It will be our only digital tv. We have traditional sets and currently receive analog transmission from the cable company. If we upgrade to digital signal will we still be able to use the older tvs without having to rent some kind of box from the cable company to convert digital to analog? Can the older tvs receive digital signals? Thanks again
- I have a Philips 42" EDTV and the Philips E-box. When I connect the cable from the wall directly into the E-box, the picture is great, however, when I connect the cable to my digital cable box, and then to my TIVO and then to the E-box (all connected with composite cables) the picture is noticeably worse - especially if I'm watching sports. How noticeable of a difference will monnster cables make if I connect my digital cable box to the TIVO to the E-Box with them? If I go w/Monster Cables, should I get the fiber optic cables? Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.
- What are HDMI & DVI and, if they are two methods of doing the same thing, what are the perceived diffences for the user.
- Can a plasma tv be installed vertically? How do you reconfigure the settings so the picture is correct? Thank you!
- I am installing a recessed outlet (like used for wall clocks) behind the display to plug the plasma display into. However, how do I include a surge suppressor? Seems like there will not be adequate space behind the low-profile wall mount(PLP-2051) to include a standard size surge suppressor.
- Can I use a Plasma T.V. monitor as a computer monitor?

- What considerations should be made when powering a plasma from a gasoline generator?
I would make sure the power is stable without any spikes/surges. I would also make sure the generator is rated for the current draw of the plasma and all other devices combined.

The first title you mentioned will be fine, the DVE is designed for HDTV calibration and the 42PA20UP is an EDTV.

You need what is called an articulating arm. Peerless and Chief make them and they sell for around $500.

A plasma can be wall mounted by anyone that has reasonable skills. One must be able to locate the studs in the wall and lift the plasma. You must use the appropriate wall mounts specifically for the plasma display.

The current digital cable and satellite boxes do not require a digital tv. The set top box will have analog outputs for use with analog tv. This will change in two years when the FCC mandates all TV broadcast signals to be digital. Then nearly everyone will have to use a set top box to decode the digital signal to be played back on analog tvs. ATSC tuners will decode the digital signals, there are some tv's manufactured today that have this built in.

The signal will result in some loss over every connection point. When introducing a device inline with the signal path, you will typically experience further loss pending the quality of the device (such as the Tivo). Upgrading your cables can limit the amount of loss between the terminations. Better cables will not remove any signal degredation caused by the TIVO. Silver coated cables provide the best performance for video playback. Optical cables are generally used for only digital audio signals. I typically suggest budgeting 10% of your system cost towards cables.

- What are HDMI & DVI and, if they are two methods of doing the same thing, what are the perceived diffences for the user.
HDMI and DVI are two different digital connections for video. HDMI has a higher bandwidth and can also except audio signals. You can read more about HDMI at www.hdmi.org.

- Can a plasma tv be installed vertically? How do you reconfigure the settings so the picture is correct? Thank you!
Plasmas can be installed in a portrait position. However, you must read the manufacturer's specification as some will require special fan kits for the change in orientation. There is typically a setting in the menu to rotate the picture.

That can be a problem with those types of installations. You may be able to find a relatively low profile plug in surge protector that is not the more common 6 outlet power strip type. Another alternative is to install a whole house surge protector at the electrical distribution box in your home. This will provide for surge suppression for all outlets and are typically better than 6-outlet type of surge protectors.

- Can I use a Plasma T.V. monitor as a computer monitor?
Most plasma tv's can be used as a computer monitor. You will have to verify it has a PC input through a VGA or DVI connection.
