- While shopping for a Plasma TV a salesman tried to tell me a "voltage stablizer/surge protector" to the tune of $359.00 is an absolute must when purchasing any plasma TV ( a Panasonic TH42PA20U/P is my choice) Is this True? Thanks for your time ! ..Lou Moritz
- The installer dropped one end of the plasma tv onto its stand this jammed it in a diagonal position he had to apply a lot of force to lift it back up, would this have damaged the tv in any way?
- Building new home, want to wire above fireplace for plasma(No brand selected)Have installed coax to area where accessories will be. Local installer says I need 3 cable wires. Thinking maybe conduit is only safe choice , although a lot more work. Any suggestions. Need answer within a few days.
- What is maxium length a connection between an HD receiver and a plasma be before there is a degredation of the signal. Also which kind of connection (VGA or Composite) produces the better HD picture? Thanks
- I am interested in purchasing a plasm screen and mounting it on the wall, but am concerned about unsightly wires hanging from the screen to the audio receiever, DVD, etc. How do I avoid this problem?
- When concealing the cables in a plasma installation, what is the best way to conceal the power cable? can that be run through the walls with the video cable as well, or should it be terminated to a power outlet directly behind the plasma screen?
- OK here it is, time to BUY but I have two questions that can be easily answered if you would please. I want to run a single cable to my new plasma. My old audio/video receiver only has two types of output, composite and s-video. So I propose to run all s-video inputs to the receiver and a single s-video cable to the plasma display. Should work, correct ? OK - so how much better would the picture be if I buy a new receiver and send over component signals to the plasma display ? Worth the cost of the new receiver ? My cable box only has s-video out, so most of the input signals are going to remain s-video input to the receiver. So would or could I benefit in picture quality by upgrading my receiver and sending over the component signal ? Thanks so much for you help with this. BTW - Your WEBSITE is the B E S T !!! Barr None !!
- Am I correct in the following? When connecting 2 digital devices, component video is analog so there is 1 D/A & 1 A/D conversion but no compression? DVI is digital but the signal is compressed? How do I choose between these? Will HDMI provide a significant improvement?
- I just purchased a high-definition plasma monitor, and noticed that there are many different grades of component video and S-video cables on the market. Monster Cable, for example, has several different grades of component video cables, some of them costing more than $100 for a 4-foot length. In order to get the best performance out of my high-definition monitor (from my DVD player and cable), do I need to invest in ultra high-end cables (like Monster's M Series), or will ordinary-grade Monster Cable (or even a cheaper alternative) suffice?
- I have heard that plasma tv's do not need magnetically shielded speakers since there is no electron tube. Is this true. Also, is there room behind a flat mounted plasma tv to install an electrical outlet to plug the unit into. I would rather not run an outlet plug directly behind the wall for fire safety reasons.

A power conditioner is generally recommended if you have problems with power fluctuations in your home, a surge protector is generally highly recommended for any electronics in which you desire protection for power surges and lightening strikes. Most of the more expensive models will have a higher Joule rating and have some sort of reimbursement policy.

Any sudden impact could potentially cause a loose connection inside the unit. This could lead to problems down the road.

It is difficult to plan an installation for something that does not exist(undecided upon). If you only have run a single coax cable to the area of the Plasma, then you will have to select a plasma with a built in tuner to accept the F-type connector. Otherwise, I agree with the local installer and would run a component cable which is 3 separate cables, plus others depending on all of your video sources such as DVD players, VCRs, PS2, Xbox, etc.

It depends on the quality of cable you are using along with the signal type. From best to worse, HDMI, DVI, Component, S-Video, Composite. The HDMI and DVI are digital signals, so its all or nothing, and they are limited to 10m without a booster with the current technology.

I would suggest running the cables behind the wall. Please contact an authorized installer if you need assistance.

The power cable should be terminated at an outlet behind the display. Have a licensed electrician install a new outlet behind the plasma display. The power cord can not be run behind the wall.

Running the single s-video cable will work as you have proposed. I can typically see a difference in the picture quality when connected via component cables. You will have to determine whether the better picture quality is worth the money for a new receiver. As you will also have to think about future devices that may utilize component inputs as HDTV is available. As an HDTV signal can not be passed through S-video.

Your statements are correct regarding the component and DVI connections. I have found DVI to be superior to the component connection. HDMI will be the first digital and uncompressed signal. To date, I have not seen any video displayed through HDMI so I will have to reserve my comments. I imagine this will also be an improvement upon DVI.

The cables you use can make a dramatic impact on your viewing pleasure. Cables are made from different materials and have various construction techniques all to reduce any noise and make improvements to the performance of your system. The price of the cables varies substantially. The rule of thumb is to budget 10% of your system cost towards cables. You may or may not see or hear improvements as the price increases on the cables, you will reach a point in which you will be satisfied. That point is different for each individual. I would suggest starting with a good mid-high end cable. The relationship between price and performance is by no means linear.

Plasmas do not require the use of magnetically shielded speakers. There is usually room behind a plasma for a recessed or flush outlet.
