- I am in the market for a 42" plasma tv. It primarily will be used as a computor monitor during the day and for movie and cable tv viewing in the evening. Which format would serve me best EDTV or HDTV? As a computor monitor I will be viewing multiple stock sharts, spread sheets and text. My choice is between the Panasonic TH42PWDGUY and the Panasonic TH42PHD6UY or any other model within the same price range which you may recomend. Thanks for your help. Stuart
- I recently bought a Panasonic TH42PA20U/P EDTV Plasma and am having trouble displaying my DVD's without experiencing a "stretched" look. The TV displays an NTSC signal fine, whether in 4:3 ratio or with software using the entire 16:9 screen size but the widescreen DVD's, which look fine in their 1.85 or 2.35-1 ratio on a standard TV, are distorted on the 16:9 display. Is this normal for plasma TV's is there a specific setting that I'm missing out on?
- Hi, I was interested in purchasing the Panasonic TH-42PHD6UY and read in a previous post that this particular model is a true HDTV. Does this mean that I do not need to purchase a HDTV Decoder to watch HDTV? If I have to purchase a HDTV Decoder, what model do you recommend?
- I live in the UK. My viewing will consist of mainly digital satellite, analogue terrestrial, digital terrestrial and DVD. I am torn between the HDTV 43 inch Pioneer (434HDE) and the Panasonic EDTV. I usually go for thge latest technology, but I have a feeling that EDTV may provide a better picture for my inputs than HDTV. WEhat do you think?
- 42" SVA plasma display regular channels perfect(CNN, ESPN, etc), but digital channels (HBO, SHO) with double vision in dark parts. What is solution? TV connected to comcast cable box by yellow, white, red cable.
- I have a Panasonic TH42PA20UP EDTV. What steps do I need to take to view local HD signal broadcasts? Do I need to get a special HD antenna or decoder? Also what type of inputs do I need? Thanks
- I recently purchased an ESA (Samsung Made) 42" Plasma with a resolution of 852x480. I also purchased a Samsung DVD player with DVI-D output (480p/720p/768p/1080i) that features 2 "letterbox removal" modes for anamorphic 16:9 enhanced movies. Since most DVDs have 480 vertical lines and the plasma is 480 lines would I be correct in setting my DVD DVD-out to 480p fo the best possible picture or would another mode have some benefit - like 1080i?
- Do they make a plasma tv that will work well for high definition (tuner is in my digital box) but also work as a computer monitor. Screen size would need to be between 20" & 30". Thanks in advance.
- I really like and am thinking about buying the TH-37PX25U/P, but i read that this doesn't come with the highly-touted 3:2 pulldown technology. However, on certain other websites i find that this model DOES contain it (CNET says it doesn't). Could you guys elaborate? Does it or doesn't contain the 3:2 chip? thanks, Richard
- I am in the process of tryng to decide on a new TV. I was set to buy a LCD or DLP until I saw a EDTV plasma TV. I have read everything about plasma TV and am happy with life expectancy and other features of a plasma. My question is can someone tell me what differences I am likely to encounter between ED and HD plasmas? How will these differences affect viewing in the next 3-4 years?

I typically recommend the HDTV resolutions for any computer use. Especially with any fine or small text or if you want to split screen with TV viewing at the same time. The Panasonic models are very good. I would also consider offerings from Pioneer, NEC and Sony.

I would verify you are watching them in the correct aspect ratio mode. There is an aspect ratio button on the remote control to cycle through the stretch modes. Make sure the DVD is selected in the widescreen format for playback and your aspect ratio is set correctly.

The Panasonic TH-42PHD6UY will display an HDTV signal in true HD; however it does not come with an HDTV decoder.

Based on what you plan on viewing, an EDTV will provide a better picture for you than an HDTV one. Just rememeber if you plan on HDTV in the future, you can not make an EDTV a true HDTV. It will always down convert it to 480p.

I would try using an S-video cable or component cable if your cable box has those as outputs. The yellow composite cable is the lowest signal possible.

You will be able to watch down converted HDTV on your EDTV plasma through an HD decoder box. One can source that from the local cable or satellite provider. There are some HD decoder boxes available that will only pick up the local broadcasts OTA (over-the-air) with an antenna. This will be connected to the plasma with either component or DVI inputs.

With an enhanced definition plasma, you are not going to be able to benefit from the scaler in the Samsung DVD player. I would set it to 480p as that is the native resolution of the plasma. Any signal higher than that will simply be scaled down to the native resolution.

Plasmas are not manufactured smaller than 32". I would suggest looking at LCD TV's for heavy computer use. LCD flat panels are also readily available in 20" - 30" sizes.

I have found that changing the video content at the source is best. 3:2 is only required for DVD playback with a progressive scan DVD player. Purchase a DVD player with a good 3:2 pulldown decoder.

It is difficult to predict what will occur over the next 3-4 years. My expectation is to encounter more and more HDTV content. You will find a differences to be in resolution. The EDTV can support a maximum resolution of 480p (everything higher will be down converted to this resolution) while an HDTV will support 1080i and 720p in its native resolution. What that means, is a sharper, more lifelike picture when watching HDTV material at 720p or 1080i.
