- What do you know about the Mitsubishi 42" PD4225S EDTV? I am deciding whether or not to purchase this or the Panasonic. I have not seen any reviews of this unit. The salespeople at ABT electronics outside of Chicago are recommending it.
- Most of my viewing is of DVDs. What do you recommend for best quality (HDTV / EDTV etc) and also which type of DVD player is the best match for a new tv (what feature do I look for). I was interested in HDTV because the picture looks so good at the store (Pioneer 4341HD), but, as mentioned, most of my viewing is of DVDs, not TV broadcasts.
- Hi. I want to buy a sdtv plasma screen. I have been told that I will get a better picture if I buy a hdtv set top box than if I buy a sdtv set top box, even though it is a sdtv plasma screen. Is this true and if so why? Thanks heaps
- why does a HD signal (1920 x 1080) from my cable providor provide a better picture that a progressive scan dvd player.. on my edtv? the picture is awesome especially channels like inhd2 and inhd. i thought my edtv down converts?

- Recently at stores, when watching a HD Demo loop (1080i) on a Sony PFM42V1, and comparing it side by side to the Panasonic HD and Pioner HD 42 inch displays, i could not see a visual difference that warranted such a price increase, although interested in HD programming, of what i have seen of the PFM42V1, it displays HD programming at brilliant quality, but according to what i have read on your site, a EDTV like this is can not show HD programming comparable to a HD display, i have even checked other stores, but the result was the same. Although resolution is lower, and according to the figures, i am not getting a true HD display, i will be pleased if the PFM42v1 can compare to the other HD models so i what i am seeing correct? can a EDTV model show HD programming comparable to a HD display? because if this true then i really dont see a need to spend the extra money
- Will the HD component signal be degraded by routing it from the cable box through an A/V receiver and then to the HDTV? My plasama HDTV has only one(1) component in connection and I'm also running my DVD component signal through the A/V receiver. Thanks, Bob
- What is the difference between HDTV/EDTV ready & HDTV/EDTV compatable?
- I just purchased a new Tatung 46" ED plasma screen. It makes quite a noticeable buzzing sound coming out of the back. I have put my ear behind other monitors and noticed the same thing, but perhaps a little bit quieter. I noticed the Sony's make almost no noise, but I don't like it for other reasons, namely price. Anyway, Is there a way I can tone down the buzzing sound? The Tatung has no fans. It sounds just like a neon sign sitting in my living room. I have to turn the volumn up on the surround sound quite a bit to drown out the noise, but it is not always practical you know. I am considering returning the plasms just because of this buzzing, but the price was so good and I like the looks and display quality so much, that I would really rather find a solution like sound dampening or building a solid case around the plasma to make it quieter. Any suggestions? Am I stuck with a noisy plasma? Thanks.
- Hi. Can a DVI digital cable for PC/monitor used for plasma's DVI/HDCP connection? Thanks, Nelson

I am not familiar with that Mitsubishi model but I know the Panasonic has been very hard to beat.

If you viewing is going to be DVDs, then I would highly suggest going with an EDTV since that will match the native resolution of the DVD. As far as players, I would suggest any good quality progressive scan player and using the component outputs.

A standard definition signal is 480i and will look great on an EDTV. The HDTV signal is going to be 720p or 1080i and will be down converted to 480p on an EDTV. The 480p signal will look slightly better than the 480i signal. As most EDTV have scalers to output to 480p, I would try a test between the two and see which works better, scaling up to 480p from 480i or scaling down to 480p from 1080i or 720p.

It sounds as if the scaler built into your plasma has better processing than the de-interlacer in your progressive scan DVD player. Remember that not all progressive scan dvd players are equal.

I think you have answered your own question. I would make sure the signal you were watching was in fact HD, as you are not in control of the signal being sent to the sets. Most people can discern a difference between an ED and HD set with an HD signal being broadcast. If you can not see any justifiable difference, then save yourself some money and go with the EDTV.

There is always going to be some degradation of the signal when you introduce multiple paths. The only true test is to perform a real world blind test. Connect it directly and then through the receiver and see if you can tell the difference without knowing how it is connected. Obviously, you will need a friend to help be you eyes or do the switching.

- What is the difference between HDTV/EDTV ready & HDTV/EDTV compatable?
Speaking in terms of HDTV only, ready means the unit has a built in HD decoder (generally for OTA only). While compatible means you will have to provide a separate HD decoder box.

I am sorry to hear your situation. I have not reviewed any of the Tatung units. I have heard various levels of buzzing from each plasma and brand. As you have learned, some are more quiet than others. There is nothing that can be done to reduce the noise level. If you decide to build a box to hold the unit to dampen the noise, make sure you leave enough room for air to circulate.

Yes, you need to make sure it is the appropriate type, either DVI-I (analog and digital) or DVI-D (digital). The "I" will have a plus sign and the "D" will have a minus sign shaped pin interface.
