- I have a JVC PD42wv74 display and progressive scan philips dvd player. Is my connection right for progressive scan DVD watching if they are through component cables? Are special progressive scan component cables needed? The confusion comes from my tv manual which states that 480p can only be displayed through the digial-in input which is a DVI-D input. My DVD player does not have a DVI-D output.
- At Best Buy yesterday I noticed that all the plasma EDTVs on display (Samsung, Zenith, and JVC) showed significant "jaggies" when panning slowly over things like windows, railings, columns, and bridge cables. The HDTV units (Panasonic, Pioneer, Samsung) did not. All the units displayed the same demo loop, which I assume was HD, since there was perceptibly more detail in the HDTV displays. Is this a characteristic difference, and if so can it be avoided? I'd like to get an EDTV, but find that kind of artifact really annoying. Thanks in advance, and many thanks for your great site.
- Can a tuner change EDTV to HDTV? I have an EDTV unit and would like to know if this is possible. Also is there any benefit to doing this. Thanks for the great information your webpage provides. keep up the gret job.
- I heard people say plasma TVs have shorter life than conventional TVs. Plasma TVs have dead pixels and will be costly to repair. Is this true with plasma TVs? How long would these TV/Monitor lasts on normal use before I see a dead pixel?
- I have a Daewoo 42" PD42S20W saying its compatible with 720p and 1080i. ITs resolution is only 852 X 480. How does it handle the higher resoltions. Any comments or reviews about this product?
- I have been told that an EDTV will deliver a better picture (vs a HDTV)from an analog cable signal, a digital cable signal and a Progressive Scan DVD. I believe it is because of the up-conversion of the lower quality signials? Is this correct? Thanks.
- I am considering buying a 42" plasma, either EDTV or HDTV. I want to fully enjoy more and more HDTV signals that are becoming available, thus am leaning toward an HDTV Plasma. However, I am concerned that a regular DVD seems to look better when played on an EDTV plasma, as its 480 signal is more closely matched than the 1080 of an HDTV plasma. I have read that there are HDTV DVD players that conert the 480 DVD up to the 1080 of an HDTV plasma. Will this help the regular DVD picture look as good on an HDTV plasma as it would on an EDTV plasma? The brand of plasma I am probably going to purchase is the TH-42PX20U/P Panasonic, as they seem to consistently get the best reviews. THANKS FOR YOUR ADVICE!!
- I was told that DVD's recorded in wide screen format are of a higher definition than the 480 lines normally found with DVD's. Is this true?
- I just purchased Panasonic TH-42PwD6UY - Can i upgrade to HDTV at a later date?
- i was looking at the fujitsu P42VHA20US plasma. is it a high definition plasma. if not, should i still get an hi-def cable box from my cable company to receive all the hd channels? will it make a difference? thank you

I could not locate a manual from the JVC website to confirm this. Typically progressive playback is through the component inputs. Any type of component cables should work for this application.

The "jaggies" are typically referred to as aliasing errors. This is an artifact that can result from scaling an HD signal to an ED resolution. Some manufacturers will perform better at scaling than others.

No, EDTV's will down convert the 720p or 1080i signal to 480p using the built in scaler.

Plasmas do have a shorter lifespan than CRTs, generally, a pixel will not go out over the course of time. If a unit has dead pixels, it will usually be from the start. Each pixel is wired individually to a circuit board, so you can imagine there is a chance of one going out in the future, but it is not very often.

It will downconvert the HDTV signals to 480p.

If you are forward looking and interested in HD, I would not consider the EDTV sets. Since the units will last a long time, and HDTV will be the norm you will probably regret purchasing an EDTV. It is true that DVD play back is better on an EDTV with the 480 lines of resolution matching. However, the TH-42PX20UP has a great scaler built in to utilize the 1024 x 768 resolution. If you opt for one of the new scaler DVD players, I would definately consider only the HDTVs, otherwise, the image will be upconverted to 1080i then downconverted to 480p on the EDTV.

DVD's have a max resolution of 480 lines regardless of the aspect ratio of 4:3 or 16:9.

- I just purchased Panasonic TH-42PwD6UY - Can i upgrade to HDTV at a later date?
The native resolution of the TH42PWD6UY is 853x480 and will never be able to display true HDTV resolutions. You should consider the TH42PHD6UY for HDTV playback.

The P42VHA20US is an EDTV with 853x480 resolution. The EDTV will down convert the HD signal to 480p. This will be an improvement over a 480i signal.
