- I am building a new house and wanting to buy a 50in plasma - Panosonic, Pioneer or Sony. Any recomendations? I will be connecting Satellite, Cable and BOSE DVD Home theatre
- I recently purchased the Panasonic TH-42PX25U/P and there is an audible noise from something that sounds like a cooling fan. It can be distracting when a show or movie is quiet. Is this normal?
- For standard cable tv, PC, and Progressive Scan DVD, what is the bext model of 42" out there? I am leaning towards the Panasonic TH-PDW6UY, but I just read the review of the Sony PFM42V1, and it sounds like it has a better upconvertor for interlaced to progressive scan. At the moment, I'm still leaning towards the Panasonic, but I want to make sure I get the best set for my particular application. Thanks--Carson
- I'm about to purchase a TH-50PX25U/P - is there a line doubler/tripler that is compatible with it, for improving output from my progressive scan dvd player?
- Your reviews suggest that Panasonic’s up-conversion of 240 and 480 line inputs is less successful for the 1024x768 TH-42PHD6UY than for the 853x480 TH-42PWD6UY. Would the 1024x768 TH-42PHD6UY be as good or better than the 853x480 TH-42PWD6UY with these pictures (and an improvement overall) if one were to use top-of-the-range graphics and TV cards on a PC and feed the XGA output to the plasma unit? Would this configuration also give better results for high-definition sources than would be obtained by letting the Panasonic hardware do the work?
- What is the implications of buying a panasonic TH-42PDW6UY and use it in England? I understand that it is not possible to use a normal TV in the US and use it in the UK due to tuner (frequency band different). The TH-42PDW6UY does not come with a tuner box, which means I could buy one that is UK compliance. Do you see any problems? Many thanks and regards Fred.
- A salesman at J&R here in NYC advised me not to purchase a commercial version of my desired 42" plasma. He told me that the connectors were different (BNC only on the commercial versions) and therefore produced reduced sharpness and clarity. Is this at all true? Are there really no differences between the two versions other than the ones you've identified before? I know you have addressed this in earlier postings but this salesman at what is a reputable store was adamant. Please help. And thanks for this great resource.
- After a long process, which ended in me deciding on a panasonic (many thanks for all your great info), I am now researching which kind of mount to buy. I want a wall mount tilt and found some great prices at http://www.mountsandmore.com. But I have no idea which one may be the better model. I would like something inexpensive, easy to use and something that could tilt approximately 10 degrees. Any help is greatly appreciated. A Peerless PSWT is $160 while the Premier Mounts PSM Series Tilt Mount is 260. I want to save some cash, but don't want my plasma falling to the ground either.
- I just got my TH-42PWD6UY and I love it. I play DVDs through the component input and they look as good as on any display I've ever seen. However, when watching DirecTV from my DirecTivo, sometimes the picture looks somewhat pixelated and solarized, especially on dark scenes. Bright scenes look good. I've tried using the S-video and composite input and they look about the same. When I play the DVD through the S-video input it looks great there too, so I know the input is working properly. My Sat system is built aroung a powered Spaun 5x8 multiswitch with good cables and connectors. I'm wondering if I'm just seeing the shortcomings of DirecTV now that I have a good monitor, or maybe this is just what an upconverted signal looks like. Any theories or wisdom you chould share on this matter.
- Dear Sir/Madam, I reside in the U.K and am considering buying the 42" Panasonic TH42PW6B. My question is as follows: Q: Is this the same model as the Panasonic TH42PWD6 and the Panasonic TH-42PDW6UY? I see that the latter is the top recomended buy on your website and would like to buy it in the U.K, but only seem to get hits from the U.S from search engines. Your advice will be appreciated. Neil

There is some audiable fan noise on the panasonics but, the latest ones have never bothered me, even during quiet passages. I would have a service technician look into it.

Both of these units are very good but with all things there is some compromise. The Sony has the better de-interlacer and fewer inputs while the Panasonic has better black level and more flexible inputs.

The unit has a built in scaler; however there are quite a few different third party manufacturers of set top box scalers. Here are a few of the more popular brands DVDO, Faroudja, Lumagen.

An input of 240 or 480 lines will generally always look better on a good EDTV than on a good HDTV just as a function of scaling. As the HDTV unit has to make up more information for the lower resolution signal to display on it high-resolution display panel. This will undoubtedly lead to some artifacts or jaggies. In the second part of your question of using an HTPC for scaling, that can only be determined by experimentation. There are some excellent scalers available for HTPCs that will perform better than the internal scalers in a plasma. The units that will usually outperform the built in unit are generally separate of a video card and are true hardware scalers.

You will need a step down transformer as this unit will operate only on 110V 60Hz. Also as this is a model designed for use and sale only in the USA, the warranty will only be backed in the USA.

J&R does not have access to sale the commericial units so the sales person is attempting to sell you a product he carries. BNC connections have been adopted in the commercial or Profession Broadcast industry since it is a more secure connection with more surface area in contact between both surfaces to provide better conductivity and signal quality.

Peerless Industries, Chief Manufacturing and Premier Mounts all are well respected in the mounts/accessory industry and you can not go wrong with a mount from any of those companies.

The Plasma display will tend to amplify any discrepancies in the signal. Although the signal is digital, it can be compressed as bandwidth is limited and the provider is continuously adding channels. The compressed signal can look poor when uncompressed appearing pixelated. This is a known problem for both cable and satellite transmissions.

The TH-42PWD6UY is for sale in the US only. I am not familiar with models for sale outside of the US.
