- I NOW HAVE DIGITAL CABEL. DO I HAVE TO GET SATALITE SERVICE TO GET THE BEST PERFORMANCE FROM PLASMA? THANK YOU
- I have been looking to purchase a good 42" flat screen tv for over 3mo. now. After reading from many reviews through out the net (including your site), and visiting my local electronic stores, I've come to the conclusion that the Panasonic Edtv is the best deal for the amount of money I want to spend. That being said, I just have one more hurdle, I know you just review plasmas on your site, but as you know there are two other technologies out in market now that are becoming more popular and have been getting a good buzz as well, that being DLP and LCOS technology. Could please give me your take on these two technologies, being that Panasonic will also be coming out w. their own DLP TV in June of 2004.
- Recently the Panasonic42PWD6UY fell from $4,995 to $3,995 MSRP. How long, in your experience, does it take resellers to drop the street prices accordingly?
- Would I need a software package to view a website and correct the apeture on a plasma screen attached to a computer?
- What is the best 37 and 42 inch Plasma TV, with HDTV, for under 3500 dollars? This will be used for general home tv viewing. Is there a list of the highest rated tv's? Or the best Plasma for the price? Thanks, DBastian
- What's the difference between 1366x768 or 1024x768 or 1024 x 1024.
- Is there any way to know if a manufacturer is about to come out with a new improved model?Im ready to buy a Hitachi 42.
- It appears one pixel on my plasma (503CMX; 2 years old) is glowing red/orange. Why, can anything be done, will it go away or go dark, and if dark, would it be (less) noticeable?
- disregarding price, who makes the best overall 42" hdtv plasma in your opinion
- We have our hd receiver and dvd player hooked up through a yamaha amp, then out to the tv. This seems to affect the ability of the tv to change its screen formats. Whrere there were 5 formats when we were directly connected now just 4:3 and 16:9. Many times a rented dvd in widescreen format still has the black bars on top and bottom. Besides zooming in and losing the sides of the image, is there anotehr way to handle this? Why would a widescreen dvd have the bars on top and bottom on a 16:9 format tv? This seems doubled to me.

I typically recommend digital cable or satellite for the best picture. HDTV through either method or over-the-air will always be the best for a plasma.

With the new technologies emerging onto the market, each brings their own advantages and disadvantages. I still believe the plasma is the gold standard for pure videophiles. DLPs are getting closer and perhaps the next generation chips will be even better.

There are many variables that designate the street price of a unit. A manufacturer lowering the MSRP does always mean that they lower the cost to the reseller/dealers.

- Would I need a software package to view a website and correct the apeture on a plasma screen attached to a computer?
You would require a video card that can support the wide screen 16:9 aspect ratio resolutions in order to prevent any scaling or distortion.

You will have to increase your budget for an HDTV in 37" or 42" size range to around $4500. I have yet to find a good quality HDTV plasma for under $3500, there are good EDTVs that meet your constraint. I would suggest looking at the reviews on the http://www.plasmatvbuyingguide.com/

- What's the difference between 1366x768 or 1024x768 or 1024 x 1024.
Those are common native resolutions for various plasma displays. One will commonly find 1366x768 on 50" monitors. The 1024x768 and 1024x1024 will be found on 42" HDTV plasmas.

- Is there any way to know if a manufacturer is about to come out with a new improved model?Im ready to buy a Hitachi 42.
Most manufacturers will mention new product releases at the CES show or will have news updates including product releases. This information can generally be found on the respective manufacturer's website. Most product releases for plasmas occur near the end of the calendar year.

It is rare for a pixel to go out over time with a plasma; however, it should eventually turn black in a few months time and be less noticeable.

- disregarding price, who makes the best overall 42" hdtv plasma in your opinion
What may be best for you may not be the best for someone else. I recently like products from Panasonic, Pioneer, and Sony. I would contact one of our recommended resellers to see which unit is best for you.

Please read about different aspect ratios on the following website. http://www.widescreen.org/index.shtml 16:9 is 1.78 and some movies are in "wider" aspect ratios from 1.78 to 2.40. Anything filmed in something greater than 1.78 will still have black bars on the top and bottom of your screen.
