Any plasma would be able to handle the action equally. You may want to match the native resolution of the plasma to best fit your HTPC resolutions. If you can obtain 1:1 pixel mapping, then there would be no scaling and the image would be the sharpest possible. This is true whether it is EDTV or HDTV.

- what is the contrast ratio, Why the diffrent range 3000 : 1 to 500 : 1
The contrast ratio is the measure of the difference between the white and black levels. The higher the number, the greater the difference. Therefore, the plasmas with the higher contrast ratio will have higher black levels or truer blacks.

I do not know the specifics of the design, however, they are similar in that they improve upon the contrast ratio for the display.

The plasma should be kept verticle during the shipping and operation. Temporarily tilting the unit to get it off a truck or to move it on a set of stairs will not impact the life of unit.

- Would it be valuable to purchase a Focus Enhancement CS-2 to go along with the Panasonic TH50PHD6UY or is this just overkill?
That may be overkill. I would suggest watching it without the external scaler first, then if you feel you want some additional enhancements, you can always add the Focus Enhancement at a later date.

Depending on your video source and the aspect ratio of the program material, you may see bars on the side of the image. This can generally overcome by various stretch modes that are built into the plasmas today. There will typically be an aspect ratio button on the remote to cycle through the different modes to best fit the image on the screen.

All plasmas come with anti-glare, non-reflective screens to improve video performance for all types of lighting situations. The specific model you mentioned, the TH-42PWD6UY does include an anti-glare screen.

Monitor and display are generally used to describe a plasma without an NTSC tuner. A plasma is generally referred to as a TV if it contains an NTSC tuner. There is no video quality differences between the two. I am currently not aware of any plasma monitors with HDMI inputs without speakers and a tuner. In general, the cost of a plasma without a tuner and speakers are going to be cheaper than ones containing those items, it is up to you to determine what is more cost effective for your specific needs.

- Is there any reason whatsoever to buy a plasma tv with a tuner, providing you have a satellite dish or cable?
A tuner is not required; however, there may be some additional features that you may desire. Such as speakers, table stands, additional inputs, PIP.
