- Because microdisplays are supposed to give plasma a run for the money I recently bought a Sony RP LCD, KF50WE610 to connect to my Dish receiver and Progressive scan dvd player. I wanted a big screen primarily for football (soccer). While boxing, basketball and movies looked fine, I was disappointed at how washed out players looked from wide camera angles. I did better on my 27" Toshiba CRT. A friend says that this is due to the signal from the station and that a plasma probably won't produce better. The problem with that theory is that dvd's I recorded from that channel play well on the CRT. Clarity and sharpness are more important to me than size and I am more than willing to go plasma (friends recommended the 42" Panasonics reviewed here) but how can I be sure that the washing out aspect is not simply a feature of big screens regardless of technology? Would bringing my football dvd with me to the stores be the best test to see if the set is soccer-friendly?
- I would like to use my computer as a source for a plasma display, concern 1: will I be able to get correct geometry from a PC graphics card, I want 1:1 pixel display from pc to panel, ie: 1024/1024 16:9 or a correct hdtv resolution. Concern 2:Is a DVI from a PC a true digital connection, and how do I know it is compatible with a plasma pannel?
- I was set to buy a plasma tv, until I read your article about pausing for one minute... will create a "burn-in." My question is that anytime I would pause my DVD for 60 measly seconds or more, I could expect a burn-in? (meaning I can't go to the bathroom w/out turning off the tv etc.? ((is there no option for a screen-saver to auto appear?)) Thanks for any help, Martin
- My plasma TV has an on/off switch, as well as a "standby" mode. Should I be switching it on and off, or can I leave it in Standby all the time?
- what is the meaninig of PDP in front of the name of plasma monitors?
- Hi I do not see response time for plasma displays. How is this compared with LCD displays? Thanks W. Theiler
- I'm thinking of buy the plasma hdtv. The coverage for that is too expensive. Do I really need to purchase the coverage? Is it important if I do or not?
- What is more important for a sharp picture, resolution or contrast? Is there a minimum level of resolution and/or contrast I should be looking for? Also, I have a "no-name" screen that the user's manual designates "PS42C". Any idea what brand this might be? There is no name anywhere on the manual or the screen itself. Thanks for the help, Erik Knight Marbella, Spain
- If I have DirecTV, will the picture on a plasma still look as good as HDTV? I've seen some TVs that the picture looks distorted by it being too wide. Will DirecTV help?
- I have a new LG 42inch plasma screen and it has problems with picture/sound sync. I know of others with this problem. I have contacted LG about this but they say it is a problem with transmission from TV stations. I find this hard to believe as it happens with all stations I receive as well as Digital Pay TV via sattelite dish. Can you please give me an opinion or suggestion on this problem

The signal has a major impact on how it will look on the display regardless of size and technology. A larger screen will make it easier for you to detect any noticable flaws. I also suggest bringing your own test material when shopping for a display. This will allow you to see the same material for all the screens and give you a better comparison of the models. If you are concerned most about sharpness and clarity, then you will want to match the native resolution of the display to the input signal resolution.

In order to have the correct geometry for the native resolution, your PC card will have to support the wide screen resolutions. If the DVI output on the card is DVI-D, then it is a digital only signal.

I would not be concearned with general home use and burn-in. I have not seen a plasma burn-in after only 60 seconds. There is also no set duration I can tell you in which it will occur. I would avoid any static images for a prolonged period of time. Still general terms, but no scientific tests have been performed to give you a better answer.

You can leave it in standby mode without any concerns. It will draw 3W-6W of power while in standby mode.

- Hi I do not see response time for plasma displays. How is this compared with LCD displays? Thanks W. Theiler
Plasmas and LCD differ substantially in how they generate the image. LCD TV's were plagued early on with slow response times that can create a trailing effect with fast action on the display. Plasma televisions have never had this problem and the time for the phosphor to light up and change is nearly instantaneous. Therefore, it has never been a specification to publish.

First off, I am not familiar with that plasma model designation. Resolution will have the largest impact on the sharpness of a picture, while contrast will impact the depth of the image. EDTV resolution of 853x480 is satisfactory for standard definition (480i) or progressive scan DVD (480p). If you are planning on HDTV, then you will require native resolutions of 1024x768 or higher.

The picture is very dependant upon the incoming signal. If it is an HDTV signal via satellite, cable or OTA, it will look better than DVD, or standard definition. A digital signal will almost always look better than analog. I would recommend a digital signal either cable or satellite; however a basic satellite signal will not be up to par with an HDTV signal.

I have not had any experience with audio/video synchronization with any of the plasma tvs we have tested.
