LG 50PV490 Review

50" 1080p LG Pentouch Plasma TV

This is a very innovative plasma offering for LG for 2012. It has many of the best plasma picture quality features but maintains a great price.

Picture Quality

Viewing angles are excellent and we like the clear coat screen on this plasma offering. It provides lots of great depth from the Full HD 1080p screen panel. It also has LG's dual XD processing engine included for sharp up conversion of standard definition images.

There are 8 preset picture modes in this plasma including two isf calibration settings (expert 1 and expert 2), Vivid, Cinema, Standard, Sport, Game and Sensor - the last of which automatically adjusts the screen brightness depending upon ambient room light.

This a very sharp looking TV with that cool new TV stand. One drawback, it does not swivel. The TV's total depth is a nice slim 2.1".

PenTouch Touch-Screen

One of the new features for this 2012 model plasma is the addition of LG's Pentouch TV feature which enables interaction with the TV screen with the included stylus (magic touch pen). The stylus (part #AN-TP200) is actually battery powered and requires recharging. It is mini USB rechargeable and asts for around 8 hours of use and requires 3 hours of charging per charge. With stylus in had you can access your own PC or Laptop files and work on them on the big screen - obviously a nice feature for office meetings due to being able to draw and notate around anything displayed on the screen. There is an included Software CD to enable use with the stylus from your computer. There is also a Wifi donge dubbed the Pentouch Dongle (part # A-TD200). You'll need a computer with at least 1 GB of memory and 2Ghz of CPU to use the software program and stylus.

Pricewise the 50PV490 looks very compelling if this is a feature set you are looking for at only around $1000. You save a lot of money on this model with it not being THX certified or having 3D compatibility. But you still get all the best panel components of the higher end PZ850.
